G'day folks

Pomarine skua or jaeger also formerly (and more properly) known as
Pomatorhine s or j but this term fell out of favour.

It comes from ornithologist's Greek: pomato- lid and rhinos - nosed.

This refers to the rim which develops over the base of the bill in summer.
Not really an appropriate specific name because all skuas are 'pomatorhine'.

Information from the Oxford Book of British Bird Names by W. B. Lockwood.

Happy birding
