Greetings. At the weekend COG had a most successful field trip,
skilfully organised and led by Chris Bellamy to whom all participants
express our gratitude. Based at Nelligen, NSW, we birded by canoe both
up and downstream of Nelligen on the Clyde River. Highlights included a
Square-tailed Kite and the apparently now common White-headed Pigeon.
On the second day we went on a most enjoyable pelagic trip from
Bateman's Bay, led by Eric Andrew, on the 'Pleasure Lea'. We saw, among
other pelagic species, the Pomarine Jaeger. Someone asked the origin or
meaning of 'Pomarine'. While no authoritative answer was immediately
forthcoming, Noela suggested that the species is named after Pomerania,
a region of NE Europe. HANZAB (vol. 3, p. 438) states, however, that the
specific name of the Pomarine Jaeger Stercorarius pomarinus 'refers to
the corneous sheath or operculum that covers the nostrils during the
breeding season' .
