On Saturday 2nd February on a visit to the Little Tern colony in Botany Bay,Geoff Ross and I heard the familiar call of a Sooty Tern and then observed an adult and immature Sooty Terns flying very low over the southern end of Towra Spit Island allowing us a good view of both birds . They then flew off in a North easterly direction. We are not sure if Sooty Terns have been seen in Botany Bay before though they have been reported further south. Keith Egan Re: Keith's report above, two Sooty Terns were reported from Garie Beach, Royal National Park, Saturday 3rd February, feeding with Silver Gulls - one was decidedly dark all over (immature?) and the other had some white on the underparts. This was a new birder's report and he was a bit anxious in case he had made a misidentification, but did state that they soured high during the time he was watching them. Glad to have confirmation that they are in the area. Penny Drake-Brockman, Examination Recitals Co-ordinator, Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Tel: 02 9351 1254. |
