Having read the plea for help re the Adelaide and Yellow Rosellas and
Rainbow and Musk Lorikeets, I thought of a statement which I came
across while browsing The Regional Impacts of Climate Change: 4.3
Vulnerabilities and Potential Impacts for Key Sectors - part of a report
put together by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It
states in part: "Australasia's isolated evolutionary history has led to
a very high level of endemism (plants and animals found only in the
region). For example, 77% of mammals, 41% of birds, and 93% of plant
species are endemic. As one of the 12 recognized 'mega-diversity'
countries (and the only one that is an OECD member), Australia has a
particular stewardship responsibility toward an unusually large fraction
of the world's biodiversity."
Decision-makers take note.
