Last year there was a thread running about the general lack of Emus seen on
a trip to NW NSW [I think]. I felt at the time the trip may have been made
at a time when Emus were not particularly visible from the roads, breeding
maybe!!
We recently travelled from SEQ to Canberra then to Deniliquin SW NSW and
back home. The following are our sightings of Emus for the trip. It is worth
noting a number were males with large young. All sightings have been
Atlased.
3 half grown young. 20/12/00 3 km N Goondiwindi QLD 28 30 24S 150 17 24E.
7 birds. 20/12/00 10 km N Bellata NSW 30 02 56S 149 47 14E.
10 birds. 20/12/00 N of Forbes NSW 32 42 14S 148 11 19E.
10 birds. 05/01/01 Colombo Creek S of Narrandera NSW 35 17 00S 146 03 58E.
70 birds. 06/01/01 N of Wanganella [Deniliquin] NSW along a 5km stretch of
road 35 04 36S 144 49 02E.
Not bad numbers for a very casual survey over a wide area. If extrapolated
over the whole area I don't think Emus are in the huge danger some people
seem to think.
