Do you need to get special permission to enter the Bendigo Mining Evaporation Ponds or is public access available?
The Bendigo Mining NL evaporation ponds at Woodvale are private property with STRICTLY NO PUBLIC ACCESS and are regularly patrolled.  As with all privately owned property, this needs to be respected by everyone and permission from the owner sought.

I am currently organising a permit-type arrangement (similar to access requirements for Melbourne Water treatment plants etc.) with the mining company.  They are 'improving' all fencing and access points at the site over the next couple of weeks.  I spoke with them yesterday and stated that I, and probably other birders from Bendigo and elsewhere (e.g. Melbourne), would be interested in accessing the site periodically for bird-watching purposes.  They appeared to have no problem with this, as long as interesting sightings were reported to them and that contact be made with the manager prior to a visit.  They have various legal liability issues which require organising (understandable at such a site) and they are currently investigating the best method by which to handle this.

I will report back to the list once I find-out what is happening.

Regards,

Chris Tzaros
