Faye and I called in en route to Taree on Saturday 6th January and the
Painted Snipe seemed to be nowhere. Other birders who visited that day also
saw none and on the western side of the freeway there were no Latham's Snipe
either. We found one bird in full view on the Eastern side in the private
road access to the various properties in that area but certainly not the
large number of birds the week before.

Indeed, comments were that the Swamp had dried considerably in that week and
there were large expanses of dried mud for us: not even the Black Tailed
Native Hen visible to another birdo only 30 minutes prior to our arrival!!!

Our pleasure, therefore, was reduced to a Spotless Crake and a Buff Breasted
Rail, Little Grassbirds and Clamorous Reed Warblers. Though the sight of two
White Breasted Woodswallow chasing and harassing a White Breasted Sea Eagle
brought a smile to the eye.

Total bird species seen between 8.30-10.00am was 35.
