Stuart Leslie Bird Research Award - Background Information

Birds Australia is pleased to announce that applications for the 2001
Stuart Leslie Bird Research Award are now open.  Established in 1997, this
national award funds the research work of postgraduate students in
Australia, enabling them to participate in essential fieldwork and attend
scientific conferences.

ELIGIBILITY 
Applications unrelated to native Australian birds are not eligible.
Applications for the following work are encouraged:

Research:
- field work on the behaviour and ecology of native Australian birds
- conservation biology of threatened native birds and management of their
habitats

Preference is given to supporting researchers at an early stage of their
research program.

Conference:
- attendance at ornithological conferences within Australia by postgraduate
students to deliver an oral presentation or to contribute a paper or poster

GRANT VALUE 
Typically, grants of $500 to $3000 will be awarded for research and up to
$500 for conferences.  Grants for research projects will be renewable for
2-3 years, provided satisfactory progress is made and reports are submitted
on time.

Grants are awarded on the strict understanding that funds will be exempt
from university, college or other institutional or organisational
administration charges.

KEY DATES 
Applications close 31 March 2001.  Awards will be announced late June.

Application requirements are subject to change each year and applications
must be received on the 2001 application form.  To apply or obtain further
