G,day all, Whilst spending some time at home in Bendigo (central Victoria) over the New Year period, I decided to check out a couple of local waterbird/wader spots, that at this time of the year, often turn-out to be worthwhile visiting. Bendigo Sewage Farm - A couple of hours were spent here on the morning of the 30/12. Highlights were an Australian Spotted Crake, two Latham's Snipe, several Red-necked Avocets and Black-winged Stilts, Pink-eared Duck and Little Grassbird. Woodvale Evaporation Ponds - This is often a good spot for waders, especially at this time of the year when water levels low and large areas of shallow muddy flats provide good foraging conditions for numerous species. Highlights this time were several Black-fronted Dotterels (more than usual), many Red-kneed Dotterels, Red-capped Plovers, Red-necked Avocets, Black-winged Stilts and, a new bird for me, a pair of Marsh Sandpipers. A colony of Silver Gull are also breeding on a small island. Tang Tang Swamp - On arriving at this fantastic Red Gum swamp about half an hour north of Bendigo (near the township of Dingee), a pair of Brolga were seen feeding in a dry paddock on the southern side of the swamp. Water levels in the swamp are still quite high, which should keep the numerous Grey Teal, PBDuck, Australasian Shoveler, Pink-eared Duck and Australian Shelduck there for some time yet. Also seen here were Stubble Quail and Latham's Snipe. Bye for now.
