I got some more details about the sightings from Rob Davis. It was not at
the north end of Herdsman Lake but the south end where the Freckled Duck
has been seen the past couple of seasons. Find the Herdsman Lake Wildlife
Centre at the south end of the lake (home of the Gould League). Then walk
left (clockwise) around the lake for 200 metres of so until you get to a
car park and a small spit to an island. The Freckled Duck hangs out around
this island, or it roosts underneath a couple of melaleuca trees about 100
metres further around. These trees normally have cormorants roosting on
top. This is part of Maurice Hamer Park.
The Buff-banded Rail and Baillon's Crakes are on the western side at the
north end of the Maurice Hamer Park. They were among the flooded grass
under the trees.
