Back again
Last Sunday I awoke & looked out our bedroom
window and about 20 metres away, sitting in a 4 metre high Cassuarina
cunninghamiana was an Olive-backed Oriole. First record for our property, which
is basically a bare block even though we are about 300 metres off a fairly well
vegetated river. We have planted plenty but all still
smallish.
We have only one fruiting tree, a Mulberry, no
fruit currently. As I watched, the Oriole landed on the ground and picked up a
worm or caterpillar and took it back to its perch . Our resident Grey
Butcherbird then sent it packing. Unusual behaviour ? I have only seen Orioles
in fruiting trees before, or at least in heavily vegetated areas.
Cheers
