I'm trying to develop a time series of numbers of threatened bird and mammal
species in Australia. Environment Australia has lists of species which cover
the "wider" Australia (including Christmas Island, Norfolk Island etc) whereas I
am trying to concentrate on the mainland and immediate offshore islands
(including Tasmania).
The White Gallinule (Notornis alba), Robust White Eye (Zosterops strenua) and
Dwarf Emu (Dromaius minor) are listed as extinct in "wider" Australia by EA.
Could someone let me know whether these birds were thought ever to have existed
in continental Australia, Tassie or other islands more traditionally looked
upon as Australia proper, or were they only present in the further flung
islands? If they did exist here, then when did they disappear?
