I noticed a bird flying across the Brisbane River as I was riding home
through Southbank this afternoon. There was a feral pigeon flying above
it, so my initial reaction was to pedal on, then I noticed that this
bird was flying low over the water in an unpigeon like manner, so I made
a point of having a dekko at it where it had landed on the retaining
wall - it was in fact an adult mangrove bittern sitting within sight of
parliament house. Another one of those pleasant CBD sightings, to go
along with the peregrine falcon, pheasant coucal and scrub turkey ...
Since I've started typing away, I was over on Macleay Island on Sunday,
and saw a group of a dozen or so needletails swooping around in front of
an approaching rain band. I also saw a number of bush thickknees, and
so have come to the conclusion that they are pretty common on the
Moreton Bay islands, as this is the fourth island I've atlassed them on
this year.
Regards, Laurie.
