G'day all

On Saturday I did some birding in the Grampians (sw Victoria) with Rob Drummond.
Most time was spent in an area just north of Dunkeld and close to the Grampians
Golf Course. After a quiet start the forest came alive and we saw most of the
birds I would expect at this time of the year. We missed out on the Southern
Emu-wrens but it was quite hot when we were in their patch and they were
probably snoozing. No Bee-eaters yet either. The highlights were a pair of
Chestnut-rumped heathwren and a beautiful Painted Honeyeater. We only saw one
but possibly heard another. I've seen one on Graham Pizzey's property a km or
so to the north but never in this patch before.

Other good birds were White-winged Triller, Brown and Rufous Songlark,
Black-chinned Honeyeater and an immature Grey Shrikethrush that had us guessing
for a minute or two. I offered female Olive-backed Oriole, Tooth-billed
Bowerbird or female Figbird but Rob's view prevailed.

A couple of stops on the way home added a few waterbirds, raptors etc. and the
afternoon's total was 68 species.

Two great flower finds were a beard orchid (Calochilus sp.) and a cluster of 5
Flying Duck Orchids ( Calaena major).

What did others see on the weekend?

Cheers

Steve Clark
