Lawungkurr Maralngurra (aka Denise Goodfellow)raised the interesting point of putting rare bird reports on ABC radio national. Even though it would be nice to have a radio report every hour on the location of a Gourney's Eagle in Holmes Jungle (only an example, )there is the minor problem of actually vetting the record before it gets on radio. Every birdline in Australia (and overseas) has the drama of stopping stringy records getting on the message bank and upsetting/fooling every other twitcher in the country. This problem would only increase if radio reports occurred.

The only way a ABC radio rare bird radio alert could work is if the BARC (the Aussie rarities committee) were in constant touch with the ABC and monitored what records came in. This might increase the turn-around time of rare bird records submitted to this committee but it is (unfortunately) unfeasible. It is still a nice thought though...

happy birding

Hello All
For years I've used the ABC to further my interests. I've raised
Aboriginal issues (my relatives and I have been interviewed numerous
times on dozens of issues); I've been interviewed on the government's
reluctance to provide public housing; on a national campaign I fought
against errant tour operators (among whom it was common practice to ram
crocodiles to 'give tourists a thrill' as one told me. Others were
chipping bits of 2 billion year old stromatolites, an Aboriginal sacred
site, to hand out to their clients). And there have been dozens of
other issues.

Our local ABC people have always been eager to put rare bird alerts over
Radio National. They've interviewed me in my fight to save local
mangrove birds when no other organisation was interested, not even the
tourism industry. Recently I've urged various contacts within the ABC
to highlight birding issues, most lately sending them statistics on the
number of Americans interested in this pursuit and pointing out the
number of media programs in that country dedicated to birds. (if anyone
has similar statistics for Australia I'd be pleased to pass them on).
And I've no reason to think that what I've said won't be considered
seriously. The ABC plays a mighty part in raising awareness of the
general public.

I hear this morning that Richard Alston, Federal Minister for
Communications, is supporting the privatisation of the ABC. I urge all
birdwatchers to protest and strongly. Whatever the ABC's faults I cannot
imagine a privatised ABC running with the issues. Write to your local
and Federal members, your newspapers. Anyone who wants to join the
Friends of the ABC I have contact details here if you want them.
Regards
Denise
