I was travelling to Nelson Bay (half an hour or so north of Newcastle NSW)
and back from the 17th to 26th October. Like everyone else, I was
distressed and concerned at the number of beach-washed corpses of
shearwater.
At one location, I was able to discuss the matter with some locals. To the
best of my knowledge these people were not birders but simply locals of long
standing with an interest in their surroundings.
The information I was given was interesting. I was told that the number of
dead was way above the numbers seen for many years but did go near matching
the numbers that occured during one year about 30 or 40 years ago. The
exact year was not recalled but a number of those present all remembered the
time.
Has anyone on Birding-aus records of this time? Obviously, the media did
not make such a fuss back then as I am sure a number of us "oldies" would
have remembered.
