Hi everyone
Could I please remind everyone of the guidelines that this list operates under?
Firstly, it is governed by the usual rules of 'netiquette', or online
etiquette, as well as the laws of whichever country one happens to be sending
messages to and from. Secondly, there is a set of guidelines specifically
written for this mailing list. They are listed on the birding-aus website (see
footer) under 'Mailing List', and are, in brief:
Messages sent to the list SHOULD NOT
* be of a purely commercial nature
* contain offensive or inappropriate language
* contain attachments of any sort
* exceed 20Kb in size
* include all of the original message if replying
(use only what's needed for clarity)
* stray too far from our main topics: Australian birds, their habitat &
conservation
Perhaps I should add that messages should not contain personal attacks on other
writers - criticise the message and not the messenger - but of course that is
covered rather neatly under Australian laws of defamation :-)
Also, messages should be, on the whole, intelligible to most readers. I don't
want to have to publish a 'Guide to Style for Birding-Aus Messages', but I
think you understand what I mean.
Some of us occasionally stretch these guidelines or even break them, and most
readers will be forgiving if it happens rarely. In the past that has been
enough. However, recent ongoing inappropriate use of birding-aus has prompted
me to warn ALL list members that if your messages to the list continue to break
these guidelines you will be warned, then suspended from posting messages.
Continued lack of observance of the guidelines will result in your address
being blocked from the list. I DON'T want to run a closed list, but neither do
I want to end up in court, or see other list members railing at each other
(good word, though, don't you think?).
Thank you to everyone who has made this mailing list such a worthwhile forum to
be part of.
Russell
