The Blackbird that sings from his post in my garden has a repertoire that
includes the sound of a phone ringing! Has anyone else heard this?
Bett Mitchell.
Not with a blackbird, which we are not yet cursed with in this part
of the country.
However, I have heard a Black Butcherbird imitating a ringing
telephone. In 1994 my husband and I were making our way around
Australia, and were camped near Mission Beach, Far North Qld. We were
right at the back of the park, about 50m from a creek. There were no
buildings in that direction. I heard the phone ring a couple of
times, and later looked down towards the creek when it rang again. I
was perplexed, because there was nowhere from where a phone could be
ringing. We walked down to the creek, and discovered that a Black
Butcherbird was the culprit. It really took us in. In fact we thought
that must be its normal call until we learned otherwise. Although we
have seldom seen a Black Butcherbird (we don't live in their area),
we have not heard this phone call again. Others whom I have asked
know nothing about BBs imitating phones. Does anyone on birding-aus?
Cheers,
Jill
