On the subject of road kills. Over the last month or so or my wife and I
have run over -1 kangaroo,a goanna, a red rumped parrot, a blue tongue
lizard, a crimson rosella, a rabbit and a galah which collided with the
bull bar of the 4WD then lodged between the windscreen wipers and the
windscreen, dripping blood down the bonnet!!
I can assure you that none of this was deliberate and in fact it became
quite distressing. The problem is not the birds you see but the ones (
such as the parrots) that you don't see that fly out of the grass on the
side of the road.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to avoid road kills? I seem to
remember something about a whistle that is attached to the bumper bar on
birding -aus some time ago. Has any body any experience with with this
device? Does it work or does the noise drive you crazy?
A cautionary tale on wild life on roads. A daughter of a friend of mine
swerved to miss an animal on the Pacific Highway near Port Macquarie.
She was doing 115 kmp with the cruise control on and that's the speed
she hit the armco wall. The car deccelarated rapidly as the engine fell
out and spun for 1 kilomtre down the road. Thank god for airbags and
selt belts.
