Hello all,
On 18/10/2000 I observed a Sooty Oystercatcher at Clontarf Beach which is at
the southern end of the Redcliffe Peninsula, South East Queensland.
The bird was on an area of rocks a 'stones-throw' (which I didn't do!) to
the west of the boat ramp at Pelican Park.
In my experience it is unusual to find Sooty Oystercatchers in this area
although the (Australian) Pied Oystercatcher is quite common.
The bird I observed is probably the same bird reported to the QOSI Birdline,
http://www.powerup.com.au/~osprey/birds/birdline.html , by Alex Bisgrove and
Rob Stogdale as observed on 13 and 14 October 2000.
For anyone in the Brisbane area who hasn't seen a Sooty Oystercatcher this
might be their best chance.
The location is easy to access and there is clear and comfortable viewing
with plenty of parking.
Of course, I can't guarantee it will be still there the next time somebody
looks!
