Further to my message a few days ago about whether the Grey-fronted Honeyeater is known to eat dirt or fine grit, I found the nest being constructed the following day on the other side of the building. So the grit may well have had something to do with egg laying. There are a lot of Brown Honeyeaters around, but they seem to hide their nests a lot better and I haven't found many of their nests over the years, whereas I always seem to locate the Grey-fronted Honeyeater nests.
