Cunningham's Gap is a worthwhile rest stop when
travelling on the New England Highway just north of Warick (Qld.).
On my way to and from Brisbane-Tamworth last
weekend I made brief stops at the top of the range and did the short circuit
near the lookout - most tracks were closed because of recent very destructive
bushfires and the rainforest is suffering very badly from the continuing dry up
this way.
Birds of interest were Albert's Lyrebird (on the
track), Russet-tailed Thrush, Logrunner, Black-faced Monarch, Topknot Pigeon
(many) and Noisy Pitta.
In the picnic area on the Warwick-side lower down
were Bell Miner, Satin Bowerbird, Bassian Thrush, Whipbirds, Little Lorikeets,
White-naped H/e. to name a few.
This is the only place where I have seen both
Thrush species - one at the bottom and the other at the
top.
