Good one David. This is an interesting twist on the discussion and with some landholders could indeed be part of their thinking. I can quite easily imagine that landholders would be reluctant to have their properties placed under the scrutiny of conservationists and govt departments as a result of somebody seeing what's there and what farming activities might be doing to the land. I know I have been heavily involved in this discussion on access, but just for the record I would hasten to state quite clearly that I personally have never been refused access to any property anywhere, except once when I strayed unwittingly (driving) on to private land and was justifiably shown the way out. I've always found most landowners to be pleased that someone is actually interested enough to want to do a survey and to provide them with a birdlist. Many are delighted with the idea. But, I also know from many accounts that some people are having difficulties with some managers of leasehold properties - not necessarily owners, and I make that distinction quite purposely. I think we all recognise and try to respect the rights of private property owners, it's a few of these leasehold managers who are proving difficult. If anyone would like to seek further clarification of the current legal situation in regard to leasehold property in SA you could speak to John Chapple at the SA Pastoral Board on 08 8204 8862. He is quite sympathetic towards birders but feels his hands are tied by current legislation and of course the usual tale of a lack of funding. Tony.
