Subject: Homebush Bay: Haslams Creek
The area that Michael is referring to is generally known as "Haslams Creek".
I atlassed it monthly for 3.5 years (out of a 5 year survey) on behalf of the
RAOU - as part of the "Homebush Bay Bird
Monitoring Project" related to the Olympics. Consequently full details of the
surveys (particularly a bird list) should be
available from Birds Australia.
The survey (over my 3.5 years) produced some interesting stuff considering
that, during my time, the area referred to was
largely a construction site, with huge amounts of bulldozing, clearing garbage
including toxic yuck and re-sealing the land
(tarred over and became a carpark), removing the overhead power lines and
putting them underground (including through the
creek), building a bridge over the creek from the carpark to the stadium etc.
When we started there was such yuck in the
creek that we often joked about three-headed fish and two-headed turtles.
Nevertheless, it was amazing how Richard's Pipit somehow knew to arrive only 2
months after new grasses had been laid (after
2 years of bulldozing). Cuties such as Double-barred Finches were around, and
the Golden-headed Cisticolas never left (but
were admittedly in a quieter part at 2KY Saltmarsh). Occasionally seen were
the White-bellied Sea-Eagles that nested at
Newington (Naval site). From memory, my own records from my Haslams Creek
surveys reached about 110 individual species.

The wildlife corridor immediately north-west of the Olympics site,
although recently planted, looks interesting. Its mangrove lined creek flows
into Homebush Bay, is flanked by ponds and a few freshwater wetlands, is
adjacent to the Millenium Parklands, (ex Naval land) which has a bit of
bush, a creek , lots of grass (which unfortunately is kept well mown) and
wetlands on Parramatta River.
Didn't have a chance to investigate the avian inhabitants, but, along
with the adjoining Homebush Bay wetlands and Bicentennial Park on the other
side of Olympic Park, plus Mason Park joining to the south, this area ought
to become a premier birding site.
Does anyone have a current birdlist for the area?
Cheers
