It is a right that pre-dates the invention of the motor vehicle.
As I understand it, you can't drive willy-nilly over private property because
that causes damage. However, if there is an established car track,
that would be okay. I didn't drive, but cycled. If a landowner
was about, we invariably waved and had a chat about what I was doing and
I never felt that my presence was resented - although no doubt there are
some landholders in Sweden who feel a bit that way. I never went
anywhere near people's farmhouses. There would be lots of rune stones
and viking relics you would never get to see if you couldn't go on private
property.
