Reg Clark wrote of an encounter with a Cassowary that took an
interest in its reflection in mirror and hubcaps.
I may have posted this to birding-aus before, but perhaps a repeat is in
order. A friend of mine driving up the Palmerston Highway (north
Queensland) came round a bend to find a car stopped in the middle of the
road. He pulled up behind it to see if he could offer any help.
What had happened was this. A visitor to NQ found a cassowary standing in
the road. No doubt this was part of the Cassowary's territory. He stopped to
let his family look at the bird. Having seen enough Cassowary for one
day, the driver drove slowly up to the bird and when it didn't move off, he
blew the horn. This, the Cassowary took exception to. It landed a kick on
the front of the car that pushed the radiator back onto the fan. The fan
cut a hole in the radiator. And the 'life-blood' of the cooling system was
running down the bitumen, as my friend arrived.
