Jo asked "My question is can anyone suggest why this bird would abandon her
nest after 16 days of incubation?".

The most likely answer to this question is that the nest was predated.  It's
not unusual for 50% of nests to be predated at the egg stage and another 50%
to fail at the nestling stage.  Bringing a nesting attempt to fruition is a
risky business.
