For birding-aussers
Some info on the "Tawny Pipit"
Page 36 "An eye for a Bird" Eric Hosking 1970
"Two Cities Film wanted Bernard Mills to make a film in which the central
character would be a star of a different kind from the usual variety, a
bird. They discussed it with Julian Huxley and James Fisher and it was
decided to choose a British rarity, the tawny pipit, which had alledgedly
been only once recorded breeding in Great Britain."
Page 36-37
"Again I accepted, although it was decided that it was quite impossible to
contemplate filming an actual tawny pipit; it nests mainly on the Continent
where the war was raging."
Page 37
"It was decided to photograph a pair of ordinary meadow pipits and keep to
shots which showed the back view only; the tawny has a plain breast and the
meadow a speckled one, but their back plumage is very similar."
Seems the art of Hollywood illusion was alive and well back then.
Happy viewing 00.30 Qld. time Wednesday 20 September.
If you get a chance have a read of Eric Hosking's book it is a pleasure.
