This is actually a good point Andrew makes, and precisely why 'domestic-field'
birds should be included in some form in guides. We need to know our enemies
movements to determine the population etc. For example are people including
these birds when atlassing?
Also it is interesting to see how inappropriate birds are used in terms of
formal symbolism - as with the Mallard. For example the Ballarat council uses
the Bush Stone-curlew as it council symbol, a bird which has been extinct in
the area for 50 years - and the Northcote council has uses the Rainbow Lorikeet
which, although it is very pretty, is not really endemic to the area and fast
becoming a pest.
