Hi all,
Been up at Gluepot for a week now conducting Black-eared Miner research. For
those considering heading up this way here's an update on the birds.
Roads are now dry after recent rain and easily passable to 2WD provided we
get no more. Remember no fires (bring gas or fuel stoves) and carry in
water.
Black-eard Miners are breeding and proving relatively easy to see.
Painted Honeyeaters (6+) were still present just past Old gluepot (see info
board for detailed directions) two days ago.
Pied and Black Honeyeaters are present in pockets. Best bet is the airstrip
where up to half a dozen male pieds and several blacks are about.
Red-lored Whistlers are calling (the only time when they are easy to find)
and I've seen one carrying food.
Crimson chats and Cockatiels seen this morning flying overhead and
White-winged trillers arrived last week so a few more migrants will surely
turn up over the next week or so.
Spotted Nightjar flying around the homestead last night.
The residents are also breeding at the moment and we've seen good numbers of
Chestnut Q thrush, Striated Grasswren, Heathwren, etc etc over the last
week.
The last week has seen 6 new birds added to the Gluepot list (mostly by
others) which is quite incredible given birders have now been in residence
here for over three years. (new species are White-naped Honeyeater, Diamond
Firetail, White-breasted Woodswallow, Eurasian Coot, Nankeen Night-heron and
Little Corella). Might see some of you up here in the next month or so.
