G'day everybody,

I'm at Charles Sturt University, Albury and am studying Brolgas throughout southern NSW and norhern Victoria. I have a very active network of over 200 people, mostly landholders, who are keeping records for me. I'm mainly looking at nest site availibility, distribution and associated waterbirds like Crakes, Rails and Bitterns. Preliminary results suggest a population of about 250, much smaller than the southwestern Vic population (about 700). These two areas are about the same size. There are only a handful of records for central NSW and any sighting here is very significant.

I am interested in ANY observations of Brolgas in northern Vic and southern NSW, especially in the last 3 months (ie. since the flocks dispersed). Only 4% of Brolgas during the flocking season were young birds, distinguishable as such for at least 2 years. This compares to a study in QLD by Blackman (not sure of his first name)in the early 1970's that got 17%. So if anyone is visiting the Kimberley, Top End or anywhere in QLD and northeastern SA and sees flocks of Brolgas, especially in the next few months when numbers up north are concentrated, i would be ever so grateful if you could count the total numbers and then count how many don't have red heads. Thanks for your time and thanks to those people who helped me out last time i sent an email about Brolgas.
Cheers
Matt Herring
