Spring's come to the ocean too, with some winter birds also hanging on.
Despite westerlies, the last couple of days off Maroubra, in south-east
Sydney, have seen strong movements. Most spectacular have been Hutton's
Shearwaters, with over 1800 birds yesterday in half an hour, and another
300 this morning. There was only a handful of Fluttering Shearwaters
amongst them. Alan Morris, how unusual are these numbers? I can't find any
references to this many off NSW. This weekend is likely to be a good
opportunity to brush up on Flutton's ID.
Also still a couple of Brown Skuas this morning, one harrassing a
Wedge-tailed Shearwater, and an early Arctic Skua, a typically aggressive,
dashing dark individual, with very little white on the wings, harrassing
Silver Gulls. How often can you see these two skuas together?
Another good record was a Fairy Prion close in, and there are still a few
albatrosses, the odd giant petrel, and also two Whimbrel flew south.
