I was in Emerald today to attend a forum, and had 90 mins to spare
between ariving at the venue and the start of the show, so did an atlas
sheet on the golf course and adjacent botanical gardens. Having left my
field guides at home, there was the odd bird I couldn't ID [eg a kite
that wasn't calling and didn't give me a good look at its underwing
pattern] but nevertheless wound up with 30 plus birds.
The main hazard on the golf course was the type that Gambollin John
would like, and the coucals were communicating in pheasant code. There
were GC babblers in the car parks and another one of those gorgeous
azure kingfishers.
However, the first for me was seeing noisy and yellow-throated miners
within a stone's throw of each other. Do these species frequently
cohabit?
