Hi Netters,
Steve Anyon-Smith and myself arrived at 7:20am, Sunday 3rd at
our seawatching site at Wottamulla in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney.
We were hoping to match our Grey-headed Albatross on a previous
watch. The day started with 3 Little Black and 2 Little Pied Cormorants
flying along the coast. Then 4 White-fronted Terns.
Steve said "What do you think about the white speck way out?". I
put the scope on the speck of a "seabird" and noted white underneath, light
brown on top and flapping low to the water, with no head. It was flying
towards us. After a while the "seabird" turned out to be a BARN OWL. It
continued to fly low to the water towards us and on arrival at the high
cliff face turned south and flew over two rock fishermen and finding a lower
cliff face went up and over and into the Royal National Park.
Other birds noted, Black-browed and Shy Albatross, Wedge-tailed
Shearwater, Fluttering Shearwaters in 1000s heading south, Gannet, Crested
Terns, Silver Gulls and Common Dolphins 20+.
