Or maybe they have all been led astray by the Reader's Digest "Complete Book
of Australian Birds", which has a rather indifferent photo with the title "A
rare photo of Albert's lyrebird. This is a male." If it is a male then is a
very young one, before its' first moult. But it looks like a female -
straight tail and no filamentary feathers. (My copy is the first edition,
1976. Maybe later editions corrected this?)
Umm - well, I took that photo, and I will admit that (as it is the only
Albert's I ever saw) I assumed it to be a male without real proof. The
photo was taken on the slope across from O'Reilly's on 28 December
1972. If you are interested I can haul it out and scan it to give you a
better idea - it is one of a series I took of a bird that I flushed and
which allowed me about 15 minutes of very close observation (lucky me)
while it sat motionless. As for the photo, it was replaced by much better
ones in later editions.
