Pallid Cuckoos

I am interested in the status of Pallid Cuckoos as migrants.

In the Sydney area they appear to arrive in late August and the majority of birds are either silent or have left the area by the new year. Those that remain later than this tend to be young birds; my latest record (unusually late) is of a juv/imm. on 7th April 1996 near Huntingdale in the Capertee Valley.

In western NSW I have encountered them in July eg at Kinchega NP, near Broken Hill and they appear to be relatively common (judging by recent reports on birding-aus) both south-east and south west of here in winter. One report from Tony Russell stated that they were present all year at Tolderol.

Are these birds resident, nomadic, migratory or all three. If migratory where from and where to, and along what route? Do they migrate across central Australia into NSW and Victoria? Do they follow the coastal route south through Queensland?

Any ideas?

Regards, Andy
