When I asked for advice of avian collective nouns, several people advised me of  relevant internet sites.  Not being competent as a net surfer, I haven't looked at them but list them here for those who may wish to do so.

Bob Forsyth at Mt Isa  tells us that -

1 The  USA "About.com" hosted by Christine Tarski's
http://birding.about.com/hobbies/birding/library/weekly/aa032700b.htm
in her section Birding/Wild Birds on 25/04/00 had 58 collective nouns listed; and

2. The New Zealand "http://nzbirds.com/   listed 148 collective nouns for birds also on 25/04/00.

Carol Probets lists the following:

http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~lizzie/html/collect.htm
http://www.comteck.com/~revenger/collectivenouns.html

Reg Clark (Australia, but I don¹t know where) writes -

A good reference for your inquiry is
And concerning net sites, he quotes from Ross as follows

Visit the Baltimore Bird Club <http://www.bcpl.net/~tross/baltbird.html>  Home Page.

If you're interested in group names for creatures other than birds, here are links to such lists:

In Part 3, I'll get back to suggested collective nouns for Australian birds
