The subject of pumping/recycling saline water was covered in an excellent
segment of 'Landline' on the ABC last week. In short, it is pumped out and
goes through processes that extract the various minerals from it. One
company is not only doing it on a commercial basis, they are making a profit
from it. In fact, they cannot supply the demand they have for the high
quality culinary salt they produce by one of the processes.
The lowering of the water table over the area being pumped from was
significant; I cannot remember exact figures.
Additionally, there are at least 2 Government-sponsored projects also
investigating minerals extraction.
Shows what you can do when you consider something as a resource rather than
as problem.
