A note on a short trip I just completed to New Caledonia, which I first
visited in 1987. The kaguas in Parc Provincial de la Riviere Bleue, east of
Noumea, are doing well, with 420 in the park now compared to 60 in 1992. I
spent a morning with Yves Letocart, who has been working with kaguas for 20
years. We radio-tracked a family of four, including a chick. This is one of
the big conservation success stories of recent times.
The crow honeyeater and some of the other more difficult endemics were also
located easily in the park, but like everybody else, it seems, I had no luck
with the grass warbler either there are on Mts Koghi.
