Talk of Ornamental Ducks reminds me of the time Victorian DNRE rang me
up and accused me of having a Black Swan in my possession!
The story was in fact that my then neighbours possessed a colossal
Muscovy Drake, of shiny black plumage with white primaries and large red
facial wattles. This creature was in the habit of standing in the middle
of the road and hissing at the traffic in our quiet street. He also used
to visit our garden if anyone was gardening - on one occasion he ate
about 40 snails in rapid succession. They were fairly coming out his
ears!
Presumably some passerby misidentified him as a Swan and denounced us
dwellers in Clark Rd for keeping protected fauna. I was known as a
birder, so next thing I got a phone call. I'm glad to say the young man
at the Department thought it was as funny as I did!
