As a long term resident of Brisbanes southern outskirts its been interesting to watch the gradual march of the Common Mynah (Acridotheres tristis) into Brisbane. Its only a few short years ago one mainly saw them on the road down from Toowoomba, and then ever nearer and nearer to Ipswich. Around eighteen months ago I noticed the first bird in our estate here in Calamvale, then a couple more, and I have been watching a family group for some time not far from my home. Then the other day I noticed for the first time some in my garden, and just this morning I see they are preparing to nest in a large gum in the yard! As yet I dont see many of them as I birdwatch around Brisbane, but they are obviously expanding all the time, and I guess will eventually become common to the Brisbane area. Are any or many being seen in the northern or western suburbs of Brisbane?

I just hope they dont drive away my native friends like the family of Superb Fairy Wrens who give me so much pleasure!
