Do Powerful Owls sometimes include a wavering note in the first
part of their calls ?
Something like nearly 2 seconds of "whoo-oo" followed by perhaps
a second of "hoo" rather than the "whoo-hoo" as in Pizzey and
Knight ?
Around 2215 for the last 2 nights (about 5 hours after sunset)
I've heard a call like this. From the CD-ROM recordings
(Simpson&Day and Websters) it is definitely not a boobook and
possible not a powerful owl.
Perhaps some of the 1 or 2 enemies I've made locally are playing
recordings of a Tawny Owl(Strix aluca) just after I've gone to
bed. What I heard was similar to the call of this Eurasian
species, which I know well from England.
