Subject: Nesting 'woodies'
Andrea notes the 'woodies' (Australian Wood Duck) nesting on her farm.
As H. J. Frith (1977) in his superb book 'Waterfowl of Australia' describes the
species, Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata) in fact only nest in trees, especially
hollows. He notes that in his experience the species prefers green trees rather
than dead ones.
To created further breeding habitat then Andrea you require more old trees with
hollows, adjacent to or nearby suitable water bodies for the security of
ducklings. Wood Duck give the impression of doing quite well with the spread of
improved pasture and farm dams across Australia.
