Anthea,
Great description of YTBC feeding. I have observed a similar 20 minute wood-chop
resulting in the capture of a large grub. The Witchetty grubs that I
occasionally enjoy when I am splitting wood (usually Acacia or Eucalypt) are the
creamy, concertina type, and they are the larvae of Longicorn beetles
(Cerambycidae). Jewel Beetles (Buprestidae) also have wood-boring larvae, so
there are several possibilities.
On the subject of handedness (footedness) mentioned by Judie Peet, in all of the
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and Long-billed Corellas that I have observed, and in
a small number of Gang-gang Cockatoo observations, the birds involved were all
left-footed. It would be interesting to know how many other birding-ausers have
observations of footedness in parrots, especially the cockatoos.
Cheers
Ian
