Hi Birders,

The Pipeline Track is a walking track which goes from Glen Davis in the
Capertee Valley, up over the ridge then down to Newnes in the adjacent
Wolgan Valley, about 7km each way. Last week (14th July) during a visit to
Glen Davis I walked part of this track, as far as Green Gully and the base
of the cliffs (I had only set out for a pre-breakfast stroll and got a bit
carried away).

There were flowering White Box from Glen Davis all along the early part of
the walk, as far up as the "Wollemi National Park" sign and Visitors Book.
After this you soon get into the sandstone country where the vegetation
changes significantly. The highlight was seeing three TURQUOISE PARROTS in
the broad gully where the walk starts; there were also SPECKLED WARBLERS,
DIAMOND FIRETAILS, CRESTED SHRIKE-TITS and WHITE-BROWED BABBLERS around
Glen Davis. The most common birds throughout the walk were YELLOW-TUFTED
HONEYEATERS, but there were good numbers of other honeyeaters too (though
no Regents found), and small groups of LITTLE LORIKEETS hurtling across the
sky.

Up in the higher areas the birds were sparser but SUPERB LYREBIRDS and
EASTERN WHIPBIRDS were in fine voice, a SPOTTED QUAIL-THRUSH called and
there was a small colony of BELL MINERS in Green Gully. When I did the
entire walk in August 1986 I didn't record Bell Miners. Does anyone know of
any other records of this species in the Capertee Valley?

Incidentally, Bell Miners have increased dramatically in the Wolgan Valley
in the last ten years. During the eighties when I spent a lot of time in
the Newnes area there was a discrete colony at "Bellbird Hill" about 5km
downstream from Newnes, and another a few km further on. During a visit
early this year I found them occupying long stretches of the Wolgan River.

Cheers,
