I have been getting some enquires about exactly where the Regent Honeyeaters
are in the Capertee Valley. The number of birds are increasing from a
handful early in May to 30, then 50 and now, possibly, 100. Mention has
been made on BIRDLINE of Port Macquarie Road. For those that aren't overly
familiar with the valley, Port Macquarie Road (Port Macquarie is the name of
a property in the valley and does NOT take you to the beach!) is off the
main Rylstone - Glen Alice Road about 15km west of Glen Alice.

I would like to say that most of the easily seen Regents appear to be along
the Rylstone Road (Port Macq Rd appears to have been used as a reference
point only although there is White Box further down this road). There are,
however, Regents elsewhere in the valley and I would like people travelling
up to see them to look wherever there are any flowering eucalypts. White
Box appears to be the major attractant at the moment.

It is important to get a handle on where the Regents are at the moment and
how many we have. This will NOT be achieved if everyone goes to the same
location. The Capertee Valley is a superb birding location so please do not
restrict yourself but also PLEASE do NOT trespass on private property. I am
headed over to the valley this morning on several Recovery Effort matters so
will check out a few locations myself.

I am anxiously waiting to hear further reports of what people find. Please
also check all Regents for bands. Please record the sequence of colours
(two bands each leg) as per the following example: Left leg - red over
silver (the metal band), Right leg - dark plue over pale green.

While I am happy to direct people to these Regent Honeyeaters please be
aware that this is not really necessary. The birds are easy to find along
the Rylstone Road.

A reminder that the next tree-planting weekend in the valley is 19-20
August. If you want to come out to the valley, do something positive for
the conservation of the birds, and be rewarded with an expert guided tour of
the Regents please get in touch.

Cheers
