Meloni and other visitors to the Yamba area,
I have been in the Yamba area recently - at my brother's property on
Woodford Island near Maclean.
I have done trips in the Nat Park areas around Brooms Head and Angourie -
it's good for coastal heathland birds especially now as the banksias and
paperbarks are in flower - honeyeaters, wrens, t'bills etc and I would
suspect Ground Parrots in the late afternoon - I have seen them at Evans
Head near the airport on the edge of town. The NP at Iluka is also good - I
saw an all black Willie Wagtail in the carpark to the rainforest walk. It is
also worth a drive to Lawrence - go across on the ferry. Just before the
township proper, there are swamplands with a good mixture of water birds -
all common species like egrets and Ibis etc. A drive around the cane areas
can produce Brolga and Jabiru as well as raptors - Osprey, Sea Eagle etc.
At my brother's place, I have seen Rose Robin, Noisy Pitta and recently my
brother located a Powerful Owl roosting but hasn't been able to locate it
since. Also, this time of year if the eucalypts are in blossom, Swift
Parrots are possible and,as well, Little, Scaly-breasted and Rainbow Lorikeets are
plentiful.
Regent and Satin Bowerbirds are also about.
