Hi all

Today, was probably what we could consider an average day of seawatching. Seas were relatively calm, mainly light winds from the south-west (tending southerly around noon) and most of the birds were quite far out apart from a few Fluttering Shearwaters, the occassional Albatross and the usual Terns and Gulls close to shore. Myself, Rod Gardner, Lorne Johnson and David Koffel saw 20 plus Black-browed, atleast 2-3 Yellow-nosed and 1 Wandering Albatross, a white-phase Southern Giant Petrel (well spotted by David), a couple of distant Prion species, around 100 Fluttering Shearwaters, an Antarctic Skua, 2 Imm./sub-adult Kelp Gulls, about 3 White-fronted Terns and some Australasian Gannets. We heard the usual Fairy Penguin(s) below near the rocks and saw a Peregrine Falcon and 2 Australian Kestrels near the cliffs. A bonus was seeing 3 Humpback Whales atleast 2 km out at sea just after noon. Rod informed us that he had also seen early this morning a Common Diving Petrel aswell as some Humpback and some Pilot Whales off Mistral Pt (which is a little north of Magic Pt).

For those who do not know where is Magic Pt at Maroubra, it is around 5-10 km SE of the Sydney CBD.

All in all it was still worth getting out of bed for and good to be beside the seaside.

Edwin

PS Did anyway have any success in their seawatching this weekend?
