Two sightings of Superb Parrots which seem to be WELL west of 'normal'
winter range, both in Gundabooka NP, some 50k SSW of Bourke in central NW
NSW. According to the NSW Bird Atlassers' Preliminary Atlas of Birds of
WNSW, the nearest record is from near Walgett, some 200k to the east.
On 10 June 2000, a single bird flew calling loudly through the camp ground.
I might have almost doubted myself, but next day (ie 11 June) a flock of
some 20 birds flew low through the scrub near Yarran Creek a couple of kms
away. They went rapidly, but we couldn't recognise any adult males among them.
Any thoughts?
In somewhat similar vein in the same region, on 1 June, a single immature
Black-necked Stork at Narran Lake NR, NW of Brewarrina - some 600k from the sea.
Trip report coming...
