Hi birders,
I was going to keep out of the garden birds thread, but being named by
Russell he's tempted me out of my silence. Yes, I have seen Humpbacks, not
from the garden, as I don't have one, but from the window on numerous
occasions. Once, memorably, there were three in Maroubra Bay putting on a
spectacular performance, leaping of the water not 200 metres away. Common
Dolphins have also been a regular sight.
The window list includes some very special birds, too. Best has to be a
Southern Fulmar 18 months ago, but not far behind is a Northern Royal
Albatross. Four other species of albatross Providence Petrels, Great-winged
Petrels, Cape Petrels, Fairy Prions, giant petrels, three species of skua
(not including Long-tailed yet), and White-winged Black Tern were also fun
to see from the warmth of the sunroom.
I tried 'scoping the Lewin's Rails across the bay when they were there, as
I could see the track they regularly cross, but that didn't work. There are
a few other good land birds, but they don't rival the seabirds.
